The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (BHSS) is pleased to announce our 9th annual VOICES celebration, to be held at Espace on Wednesday May 29th, 2013 in New York City. We are excited to announce our honorees Esperanza Spalding, Grammy Award winning singer and bassist, and Susan L. Taylor, Editor in Chief Emeritus of Essence Magazine, and Founder of the National CARES Mentoring Movement, and special guest Tony Award nominated actor Norm Lewis (lead in Porgy and Bess, Scandal). Our host for the evening will be MSNBC News Anchor Tamron Hall. Our Fundraising Chair is Charles N. Schorin. The event will begin at 5:30pm with a light reception on the second floor of the Schomburg Center. The program will begin at 7:00pm in the auditorium. President’s remarks will be followed by a Q&A session by Alison Stewart '88 (CBS News Correspondent)

The Black Air Foundation

On multiple occasions it was my distinct pleasure to meet and speak with George S. Lima in Providence, Rhode Island at Brown University. A distinguished veteran of the Tuskegee Airman and committed community advocate

The Black Air Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is dedicated to empowering minority youth through education. Black Air is the brainchild of George S. Lima (1919-2011), whose remarkable experiences as a “Tuskegee Airman” came to the attention of the public in the documentary “Black Men Can Fly”.

Building on this theme, “Flight” symbolizes a youth’s opportunity to advance socially and economically.  “Air” is more than just the space around us, but the medium, or media, through which we communicate. Lima wanted it to be known that not just Black men, but “Black kids can fly” too! As such, the vision for the Foundation includes  career opportunities for youth in the fields of aviation, radio, television and filmmaking.

The New York chapter of the Inman Page Black Alumni Council (IPC-NY) invites you to a Farewell Event for Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons. The event will take place in New York City on Wednesday, February 22.  

President Simmons announced her plans to step down from the Brown presidency at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year. Fortunately for Brown, she will continue as Professor of Comparative Literature and Africana Studies.

Black Male Achievement Fellowship Application Open Now, Due January 9th, 2012 Echoing Green Open Society The Open Society Foundations and Echoing Green have established a new fellowship program for individuals dedicated to improving the life outcomes of black men and boys in the U.S. It is the first fellowship program of its kind that targets social entrepreneurs who are starting up new and innovative organizations in the field of black male achievement. The BMA Fellowship will include start-up capital ($70,000) and technical assistance over 18 months to help new leaders launch and build their organizations; access to technical support and pro bono partnerships; and a community of like-minded social entrepreneurs and public service leaders.
