Dana Edell, Ph.D, Executive Director, SPARK Movement (’98): At SPARK Movement, an intergenerational girls’ activist organization, Dana collaborates with girls to launch successful action campaigns including a media campaign that led to Seventeen Magazine’s public promise to never Photoshop girl models and to commit to race and body size diversity in their pages. She trains and supports girls (ages 13-22) to take action, produce theater, create videos and write blogs. Dana was co-chair of the Girls’ Participation Task Force at the United Nations and she teaches Theatre and Activism at New York University and the City University of New York.
Amy Kantrowitz, COO, Free Arts NYC (MA’92): Amy has two decades of nonprofit experience and currently serves as COO of Free Arts NYC, an arts education nonprofit that provides underserved children with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs. Amy has worked with some of NYC’s leading education and youth development organizations, including New Visions for Public Schools, and The After-School Corporation - this path emerged directly from her Brown MAT, work with Professor Ted Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools, and VISTA year at the Swearer Center for Public Service.

Josh Landay, Director, Eye to Eye Diplomats (’02): Josh is a professional actor, teaching artist, and non-profit program director. He serves as Director of the speakers bureau of Eye to Eye, a national nonprofit organization for students with learning disabilities.  Since launching the Diplomats program in 2011, Mr. Landay has developed and coordinated over 250 public engagement presentations, including events at the White House and the U.S. Department of Education. He has also performed in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway as well as in the West End, Las Vegas, and the first national tour. 

Khary Lazarre-White, Executive Director & Co-Founder, The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (’95): Khary is a social entrepreneur, educator, non-profit executive, writer and attorney. In 1995 he co-founded The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, a nationally renowned, comprehensive youth development and educational organization that provides rites of passage programming, after school care, counseling, summer camps, job training, college preparation and scholarships, employment opportunities, community organizing training, legal representation, and month long international study programs to Africa and Latin America. Khary has extensive experience as a public speaker across the country, writes regular opinion pieces for The Huffington Post, and essays for publications that have included NYU Press, Nation Books, and MSNBC.com.

Carlos Lejnieks, CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, & Union Counties (’00): Lejnieks took over an atrophied Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in 2008 and, within four years, went from serving approximately 100 youth to serving well over 1,100. Under his leadership, BBBS has received numerous awards from local, state and national entities, including a formal recognition by President Obama. Lejnieks has served on President Barack Obama’s Regional Finance Committee, Governor Chris Christie’s Education Transition Team and Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s Transition Team. In 2016, he was the NY Yankees “Civic Leader Spotlight”.
Shalinee Sharma, Executive Director & Board Member, Zearn (’98): Zearn Math was created to fix math education for all kids. It offers an internationally-normed, rigorous curriculum that combines personalized digital lessons with daily targeted small group instruction so that every teacher can reach every student, every day.

SIP is a Wall St. Alphas established tradition where, for several years, hundreds of sophisticated, young professionals and executives in various fields, city leaders, and the movers and shakers in the tri-state area have come to experience live music performances, a silent auction, exciting giveaways, delicious hors d'œuvres, and a vast assortment of carefully selected fine wines and cocktails. SIP will raise funds to support and develop programs that address the plight of young African-American and Latino-American men in the New York City area through the Alpha G.E.N.T.S. (Gaining Essential Networking Tools for Success) mentoring program. The Alpha G.E.N.T.S. mentoring program, provide young men with extraordinary life-changing experiences through a myriad of educational programs, college tours and lifelong mentoring.

Andrea Webster - an accomplished, multifaceted professional whose passion, values and unwavering commitment to her community are the embodiment of AKA's credo: "To be supreme in service to all mankind." Elected as the 36th President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's oldest graduate chapter in the New York metropolitan area, she is leading Tau Omega Chapter in its 91st year of serving the Harlem Community and beyond. Andrea also serves as a Trustee on the Tau Omega Charitable Trust Fund, Incorporated's Board.

Arva Rice - President & CEO of the New York Urban League (NYUL) an organization whose mission is to enable African Americans and other underserved communities to secure a first class education, economic self-reliance and equal respect of their civil rights through programs, services and advocacy. Prior to joining NYUL, she served as the Executive Director of Project Enterprise, an organization that provides business loans, technical assistance and peer support to New York City entrepreneurs.

Genese Jamilah - Genese is Founder & Editor in Chief of "I Don't Do Clubs," an events and lifestyle blog catering to Black professionals around the country. She takes great pride in helping her peers find social and professional activities. Genese is being recognized for her leadership in the field of Entrepreneurship through her work with "I Don't Do Clubs." We pleased to commemorate her achievements.

Pastor LaKeesha Walrond - Executive Pastor of First Corinthian Church (FCBC) in Harlem, New York. In this capacity she has been able to expand the many administrative aspects of ministry in an urban setting. In 2013, Rev. Walrond launched The Getting to Greatness Women's Conference promoting women's empowerment, leadership development, and wellness and wholeness. During her time in New York she has received numerous awards and recognitions.

Anti-Violence Panel Discussion | Tue 9.15.15 | The New School - More Than A Protest Novel: Connecting the Dots




Please join us for the upcoming event, “More Than a Protest Novel: Connecting the Dots - 1.5 Million Black (Wo)Men Missing,” a thought-provoking anti-violence panel.
Co-hosted by Black Ivy Events; the Harlem Alphas of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and New Black School (student group), it will take place on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. at The New School’s Lang Center: 55 West 13th Street, off Avenue of the Americas (6th Avenue).
This FREE event will take a look at personal experiences with violence; the current anti-violence space; real stats on homicide rates; and policy initiatives and new/innovative solutions to address the violence (including prayer).
It will also examine public policy and connect the dots with recent events like the deaths of Freddie Gray and Sandra Bland, and the Charleston Massacre.

The framework for the panel is the first book in novelist Petra E. Lewis’ trilogy, The Sons and Daughters of Ham, Book I: A Requiem, which examines a family in the aftermath of violence.

Bro/Sis Announces Annual Voices Gala May 14, 2015



The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (Bro/Sis) is proud to announce that we will host our eleventh annual Voices event on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Gotham Hall located at 1365 Broadway.

Our honorees are Michele Roberts, the Executive Director of the National Basketball Players Association, and Lynn Nottage, the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright.  This event will celebrate 20 years of Bro/Sis providing transformative youth service - 1995-2015!

Voices is our signature annual benefit highlighting our youth and life changing programming. The event provides and extraordinary opportunity for our dynamic supporters to celebrate Bro/Sis' commitment to helping youth develop into critical thinkers, community leaders and social change makers.

Founded in 1995, Bro/Sis provides comprehensive, holistic and long-term support services to youth who range in age from eight to twenty-two.  We offer wrap around evidence-based programming, four-six year rites of passage programming, thorough after school care, school and home counseling, summer camps, job training, college preparation, employment opportunities, community organizing training, and international study programs to Africa and Latin America.

Bro/Sis is locally based, with a national reach, as we publish assorted curricula and collections of our members' writings; trains educators from throughout the nation on our approach; and our leadership is invited to speak and present at educational and policy convenings and conferences across the country.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Between 13 and 24 July, 2015, the Columbia University Institute for Research in African-American Studies (#IRAAS) will convene a two-week Summer Teacher's and Scholar's Institute (STSI), focusing particularly on the history, cultures, and institutions of African-descended peoples in New York City. New York, home to Harlem and numerous other historic black enclaves, historically and today is one of the capitals of Black America, and even the Black World. 

This Summer Institute offers what few others are able: the opportunity to study African-American history, culture, politics, and life through the lens of New York, and in New York. 

The Summer Teacher's and Scholar's Institute (STSI) will be open to high school and college/university instructors, independent scholars and researchers, public historians, biographers, journalists, and graduate students, and will explore various historical and contemporary themes, including: Slavery, Freedom, Abolitionism, and Emancipation; the New Negro Movement and the Harlem Renaissance; Educating Harlem (and Beyond): Histories of Black Education in New York City; Civil Rights, 1940-the present; Black Women Intellectuals; "Beyond Harlem: Brooklyn and the Bronx"; Race, Policing and Criminal Justice, 1880-present; Black Immigration since 1965; Health/Medical Rights and Politics: From Tuberculosis to HIV; and Black Politics from the Margins to Mainstream.

ELIGIBILITY
The Summer Teacher's and Scholar's Institute (STSI) will be open to high school and college/university instructors, independent scholars and researchers, public historians, biographers, journalists, and graduate students.

Cheryl D. Hicks is an associate Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she is a faculty affiliate in Africana Studies and an adjunct faculty member in Women and Gender Studies. She holds a B.A. in American History from the University of Virginia and a M.A. as well as Ph.D. in American History from Princeton University.
Her research addresses the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and the law. She has published in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review and the Journal of the History of Sexuality. She is the recipient of several awards including the University of Virginia’s Carter G. Woodson Postdoctoral fellowship and a Scholar-in-Residence fellowship from the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
Her first book, Talk With You Like a Woman: African American Women, Justice, and Reform in New York, 1890-1935 (University of North Carolina Press, 2010) received the 2011 Letitia Woods Brown Book Award from the Association of Black Women Historians and honorable mentions from the 2011 John Hope Franklin Prize from the American Studies Association and the 2011 Darlene Clark Hine Prize from the Organization of American Historians. Her new book project, “The Case of Hannah Elias: Interracial Intimacy and Civil Rights in Turn-of-the-Century New York,” interrogates the trajectory of a covert, consensual interracial relationship that ultimately precipitated murder, scandal, and civil rights protest.
