Improving Educational Outcomes for Young Men of Color

JPMorgan Chase is committed to helping disadvantaged young people gain access to 
the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to compete in a challenging global economy.

About the Fellowship Initiative

Too many young people face daunting odds as they attempt to navigate the challenges of high school and the prospect of college and the workplace. For young men of color, particularly those from economically distressed communities, poor educational opportunities and few positive professional role models can put high school graduation and the economic promise of a college degree out of reach.

Beginning in 2010, JPMorgan Chase launched The Fellowship Initiative (TFI) in New York City to see if the right combination of intensive academic and leadership training could help young men of color complete their high school educations prepared to excel in high quality, four-year colleges and universities. This pilot demonstrated that with a comprehensive enrichment program, these students were able to rise to the challenge, work hard and expand their own expectations of what they could achieve.

Recognizing the power of TFI to change lives, JPMorgan Chase decided to continue the program in New York, expand it to two new cities – Chicago and Los Angeles – and grow the number of young men served in each city to 40.

Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program Deadline: March 18, 2015 (3 p.m.) This program offers four-year postdoctoral research awards to support physicians and dentists from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants should be committed to developing careers in academic medicine and dentistry and to advancing the understanding and elimination of health disparities by serving as role models for students and faculty of similar background. ABOUT THE PATRICIA R. VATTUONE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION


Patricia Rocio Vattuone was born on May 22, 1957. She died of cancer on April 7, 2006. Her family has created a scholarship in her name to recognize young people who have overcome significant obstacles in their lives and achieved success academically.

Patricia was born in Lima, Peru and grew up in San Francisco. While working as a school bus driver Patricia earned her Associates Degree at San Francisco City College and transferred to UC Berkeley. She graduated with honors from UC Berkeley in 1998 with a degree in Development Studies despite being a mother of four. In 2001 she was admitted to the Mid Career program at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and graduated with her MA in 2003.

Throughout her life, Patricia was an activist. She was a labor organizer with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and successfully organized graduate students into the first union at UC Berkeley. She organized immigrant parents in San Francisco and Berkeley, and she was active in the movements that supported human rights in Central America and South Africa.

The PRV Scholarship Fund will award a small number of scholarships ($2,000 per scholarship winner) to students who exemplify the qualities of Patricia Vattuone. Interested students should fill out the application below and forward it to Dr. Pedro A. Noguera – pedro.noguera@nyu.edu

The Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race is launching a new speaker series, Working Your Degree, on the practical applications of degrees in various interdisciplinary fields of study (such as gender studies, Latino/a studies, and African American studies).  Over the course of the next academic year, this series will feature individual speakers and panels with prominent individuals from a wide range of fields such as academia, the arts, and the public sector, etc.  The speaker for the first event on November 12 is Feniosky Peña-Mora, the recently appointed Dean of SEAS.  Co-sponsored by the Institute for Research in African-American Studies and Center for Career Education.

This is the college fair event of the year!

The Knicks Poetry Slam Program is broken up into two contests, Spoken Word and Written.  

1. Spoken Word Competition — A Poetry Slam competition where students progress through an Open Audition, Poetry Workshops, Preliminary Slams, Semi-final Slams, all to compete at the Knicks Poetry Slam Finals at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway.

Spoken Word Prizes

• 1st place - $10,000 laptop and printer
• 2nd place - $7,500 laptop and printer
• 3rd place - $5,000 laptop and printer
• 4th — 10th place - $1,000

To be eligible for this competition, participants must prepare a 1-minute poem audition and perform before a panel of judges at the College Fair on November 7th between 10am-3pm. Top scorers will be placed in a 5-week writing workshop series taking place at sites across the city. Open to teens ages 13-19 years old.

2. Written Competition — students must submit a portfolio of original work including: an essay "The Reason I Write", poetry samples, community service and a resume. The portfolio will be reviewed by a panel of judges to determine the winners.

• 2 full scholarships (4 years) to the University of Wisconsin
• 1 full tuition scholarship (4 year) to Mercy College

To be eligible for this competition, participants must register here. No audition is necessary. Open to High School Seniors. 

3.The New York Knicks College Fair
(YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ENTER A COMPETITION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE COLLEGE FAIR)

The New York Knicks College Fair will be held on November 7, 2009 from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M in the Hammerstein Ballroom in the Manhattan Center.

This College Fair is one of the most unique annual college fairs around the tri-state area. High school students are encouraged to come out and meet with over 60 colleges and universities from around the country. While exploring the fair, you will be able to watch master poets and dance groups perform, listen to music and live bands, and interact with over 2,000 students. In addition to all of these festivities, there are two dynamic Poetry competitions going on at the same time.

College application workshops will be conducted throughout the day and financial aid advisors will be on hand to answer any questions.

Special guests, including Knicks Alumni, will make periodic appearances throughout the day and sign autographs.
