The Mis-Education of Ms. Freeman - Surviving in New York City Show at THEATERLAB

The Mis-Education of Ms. Freeman

Surviving in New York City
Tuesday, November 6, 2018 7:30 PM
TheaterLab, 357 West 36th Street 3rd Floor - New York, NY
Surviving in New York City is one thing, but teaching the precocious kids that live there? That's a whole different reality show.
This first time teacher soon realizes that her students have their own lesson plan, and it doesn't involve Math.
She has to survive the baptism by fire in order for her students to learn!
You think you know what it takes to be a teacher, trust me you have no idea!
Written & Performed by: Alaina Freeman
Directed by: Susan Campanaro
**TICKETS ARE LIMITED** (first showing). All ticket purchases must be made electronically. There will be no ticket sales at the door.

Sundays, 7 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Brenda Greene and writer, social justice activist and attorney Khary Lazarre-White discuss Passage, Seven Stories Press, 2017. Greene and Lazarre-White discuss the themes in this coming of age novel and Lazarre-White's work with The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, a youth organization which he co-founded in 1995. Brotherhood/Sister Sol provides comprehensive programming on issues such as leadership, educational achievement, social justice and politics.  Passage is the story of Warrior, a young Black man growing up in urban New York City. Warrior is an old soul carrying the memories of his ancestors and surrounded by a loving mother, father and sister. His journey addresses the spiritual, emotional and social needs of Warrior.  Although the novel takes place in the 1990s, it also reflects the challenges facing young Black men today.

Khary Lazarre-White in Conversation With Farah Griffin and Jelani Cobb

Monday October 09, 2017 7:00 PM Lazarre-White's novel Passage tells the story of Warrior, a young black man navigating the winter streets of Harlem and Brooklyn in 1993. Warrior is surrounded by deep family love and a sustaining connection to his history, bonds that arm him as he confronts the urban forces that surround him, including some that seek his very destruction. Passage is a novel for then and now.

Dr. Zinga Fraser At Brooklyn Historical Society: “Women in Politics: Brooklyn & Beyond” 11/8/16

Professional Development

Professional Learning with Brooklyn Historical Society
Our professional development workshops for teachers at BHS and BLDG 92 provide teachers with a forum in which to engage with new scholarship in history, sustainable design, race and identity and related fields; practice pedagogical approaches in collaboration with colleagues; and learn about museum-based school programs and curricula.

Election Day Professional Learning Workshopszinga-fraser-2016-07-18
At Brooklyn Historical Society: “Women in Politics: Brooklyn & Beyond”November 8, 2016, 8:30 am – 3:00 pm
Register Here, $25
With In Pursuit of Freedom digital curriculum and Dr. Zinga Fraser, director of the Shirley Chisholm Project.
On this historic Election Day, we will explore the role of women in politics in Brooklyn and beyond, and provide resources for bringing this important history into your classroom. We’ll consider political involvement broadly, from Shirley Chisholm’s congressional service and presidential campaign to Mary White Ovington and the NAACP to Maritcha Lyons’ influence in 19th century education for students of color. We’ll also mine BHS’s archives for opportunities to find women’s political contributions in primary sources that will broaden your students’ concept of American history.
The workshop is open to all NYC teachers, with primary source material best suited to grades 4 and up.
Fee includes breakfast & lunch.
