Urban Debate Leagues have produced life-changing academic outcomes for minority students, helping prepare them for college and beyond. Recent peer-reviewed research found that debaters in Chicago Public Schools graduated at a near 80 percent rate, compared to 55 percent for non-debaters. The study also showed that African American male debaters were three times less likely to drop out than their non-debating peers

On Saturday March 26th, The Brotherhood/Sister Sol* will hold an event in Los Angeles.... Bro/Sis Comes to Hollywood
Our host will be Tracee Ellis Ross, we will have a keynote speech from the actor and activist Hill Harper, and there will be performances by Vanessa Williams and our award winning poets, Lyrical Circle....

* Founded in 1995, The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (Bro/Sis) provides comprehensive, holistic and long-term support services to youth who range in age from eight to twenty-one. Bro/Sis offer wrap around evidence-based programming, focusing on issues such as leadership development and educational achievement, sexual responsibility, sexism and misogyny, political education and social justice, Pan-African and Latino history, and global awareness. Bro/Sis provides four-six year rites of passage programming, thorough five day a week after school care, school and home counseling, summer camps, job training, college preparation, employment opportunities, community organizing training, and international study programs to Africa and Latin America. The organization is community based with a national reach as it publishes assorted curricula and collections of their members’ writings and trains educators from throughout the nation on its approach.
Bro/Sis’ leadership is invited to speak all across the nation at institutions that have included the Ford Foundation, George Soros’ Open Society Institute, Harvard University, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Heinz Endowments, American Educational Research Association, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, The City College of New York, University of Florida’s Law School, Atlantic Philanthropies, and the National Principal Leadership Institute, among others. The Brotherhood/Sister Sol has earned national recognition for its model, receiving awards that include, Oprah Winfrey’s Angel Network Use Your Life Award, and also awards from such institutions as the Ford Foundation, Abyssinian Development Corporation, New York State Department of Education, RUSH Philanthropic Arts Foundation, New York Women’s Foundation and Brown University.
