Events celebrating life of Marable to be webcast live

By Tim O'Keeffe on October 19, 2011 2:46 PM |

The life of Manning Marable, the prolific author and founding director of the Africana and Latin American Studies Program at Colgate, will be celebrated Monday (Oct. 24) with two campus events that also will be webcast live.
Marable died April 1, 2011, at age 60. His book, Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, was published just three days after his death. The biography, at nearly 600 pages, has been characterized in media accounts as a re-evaluation of Malcolm X's life that challenges long-held beliefs about the civil rights leader.
Marable was at Colgate from 1983 to 1987, teaching a range of courses including African American Social Thought and African American Freedom Struggles.
The two Monday events are open to the public and also available online at http://livestream.com/colgateuniversity. There is no special software needed to view the live webcasts.
The events:
-- 4:15 p.m., Love Auditorium
Keynote address by Clayborne Carson, professor of history and the founding director of The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research & Education Foundation. His topic will be "Manning Marable on the Integrity of Leadership and Scholarship in History's Greatest Freedom Struggle."
-- 7:30 p.m., Love Auditorium
Three scholars, Robyn Spencer (Lehman College), Russell Rickford (Dartmouth College), and Komozi Woodard (Sarah Lawrence University) will discuss Marable's Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention

Worst Drought in 60 years

Have you seen the photos? They're horrifying. Young children malnourished and struggling to survive. Thousands of people desperately searching for food and water. Fields and livestock lifeless and depleted.

The worst drought in 60 years is ravaging the Horn of Africa. Click here to automatically sign our petition telling world leaders to step up funding and stop this crisis:

http://act.one.org/sign/horn_of_africa_us

Of course these are more than just photos. Real people in the Horn of Africa are suffering through a historic drought that worsens by the hour. Real people are trying to find the food and water they need just to survive one more day. Already tens of thousands have starved to death, and an estimated 11.6 million are in desperate need of basic provisions. I don't know about you, but that's pretty hard to fathom.

Despite the urgency of the situation, most world leaders are responding too slowly. Immediate aid is essential. Yet at the same time we must not let them drop the ball on long term solutions to prevent future crises.

Our petition reads:

Dear World Leaders,
Please urgently provide the full funding that the UN has identified as necessary to help people in the Horn of Africa, and please keep your promises to deliver the long term solutions which could prevent crises like this from happening again.

The truth is this: We have the power to stop starvation- and the causes of starvation. What's happening in the Horn of Africa is horrible, but there's still time to save lives. I don't want to see any more photos like this, and I don't think you do either. Let's make sure our world leaders step up, right now.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

Mission and Vision Statement of the Memorial Project

Mission Statement

To commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by leading a collaborative funding, design, and construction process in the creation of a memorial to honor his national and international contributions to world peace through non-violent social change.

Vision Statement

Dr. King championed a movement that draws fully from the deep well of America's potential for freedom, opportunity, and justice. His vision of America is captured in his message of hope and possibility for a future anchored in dignity, sensitivity, and mutual respect; a message that challenges each of us to recognize that America's true strength lies in its diversity of talents. The vision of a memorial in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. is one that captures the essence of his message, a message in which he so eloquently affirms the commanding tenants of the American Dream — Freedom, Democracy and Opportunity for All; a noble quest that gained him the Nobel Peace Prize and one that continues to influence people and societies throughout the world. Upon reflection, we are reminded that Dr. King's lifelong dedication to the idea of achieving human dignity through global relationships of well being has served to instill a broader and deeper sense of duty within each of us— a duty to be both responsible citizens and conscientious stewards of freedom and democracy.

Will Black Male Achievement Programs Help Bridge The Gap?

Written by Johan Thomas on July 14, 2011 4:47 pm

Last week, the San Diego Unified School District unveiled its plan to bring Black students up to speed. Its course of action — a $3.5 million effort that incorporates college-preparation, parent workshops and centers, and faculty members that serve as liaisons for families of Black students.

The district’s program is one of many springing up around the nation focusing on bridging the Black student achievement gap.

Programs in Richmond, Boston, Palm Beach, Atlanta, and Cincinnati have made news for their efforts in helping to lessen the crisis.

Urban Debate Leagues have produced life-changing academic outcomes for minority students, helping prepare them for college and beyond. Recent peer-reviewed research found that debaters in Chicago Public Schools graduated at a near 80 percent rate, compared to 55 percent for non-debaters. The study also showed that African American male debaters were three times less likely to drop out than their non-debating peers
