This conference features emerging work on black women's contributions to black thought, political mobilization, creative work and gender theory. Scholarly Panels, Roundtables, and Keynote delivered by Professor Elizabeth Alexander will focus on black women as intellectuals across a broad geography including Africa, the Caribbean, North and South America, and Europe. Over a period of three days we aim to piece together a history of black women's thought and culture that maps the distinctive concerns and historical forces that have shaped black women's ideas and intellectual activities.

The conference is sponsored by Columbia University's Center for the Critical Analysis of Social Difference (CCASD), Institute for Research in African American Studies (IRAAS), Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWAG), Institute for Social and Economic Research Policy (ISERP), Office of the Provost, and History Department.

Urban Debate Leagues have produced life-changing academic outcomes for minority students, helping prepare them for college and beyond. Recent peer-reviewed research found that debaters in Chicago Public Schools graduated at a near 80 percent rate, compared to 55 percent for non-debaters. The study also showed that African American male debaters were three times less likely to drop out than their non-debating peers

* Founded in 1995, The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (Bro/Sis) provides comprehensive, holistic and long-term support services to youth who range in age from eight to twenty-one. Bro/Sis offer wrap around evidence-based programming, focusing on issues such as leadership development and educational achievement, sexual responsibility, sexism and misogyny, political education and social justice, Pan-African and Latino history, and global awareness. Bro/Sis provides four-six year rites of passage programming, thorough five day a week after school care, school and home counseling, summer camps, job training, college preparation, employment opportunities, community organizing training, and international study programs to Africa and Latin America. The organization is community based with a national reach as it publishes assorted curricula and collections of their members’ writings and trains educators from throughout the nation on its approach.

Join us for the 2011 Harlem Fine Arts Show (HFAS 2011), a continuation of the tradition of the National Black Fine Arts Show, which art aficionados have enjoyed at New York’s Puck Building for 14 years.

Past notable guests have included: Gayle King, Congressman and Mrs. Charles B. Rangel, Spike Lee, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, New York City and State Government Officials, Susan L. Taylor, Oprah Winfrey and many others.

HFAS 2011, sponsored by Amtrak and Grey Goose, is one of the largest and most prestigious collections of works featuring

Civil Rights Activists Gather for 50th Anniversary of SNCC

A national symposium celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee will take place on Thursday, April 22, and Friday, April 23, 2010, at Brown, sponsored by the Department of Africana Studies. The symposium is free and open to the public.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — A national symposium celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) will take place on Thursday, April 22, and Friday, April 23, 2010, at Brown University, sponsored by the Department of Africana Studies.
The symposium, “Come Let Us Build A New World Together,” will feature a series of conversations among SNCC activists, scholars, students, and the general public, examining the history of the organization and its continuing relevance in American society. The symposium will emphasize SNCC’s grassroots organizing tradition, philosophy, and strategies.
The symposium will feature a number of distinguished participants including:

• Robert P. Moses, former SNCC Mississippi Project director, MacArthur “Genius” Award winner, and founder of the Algebra Project;
• Vincent Harding, former advisor to Martin Luther King Jr. and noted scholar of African American history;
• Judy Richardson, former SNCC field secretary and associate producer of the award-winning PBS series Eyes on the Prize;
• Maria Varela, former SNCC field secretary and MacArthur “Genius” Award winner;
• Muriel Tillinghast, former SNCC field secretary and interim general manager of WBAI.

Through a series of panels, the symposium will focus on such topics as the eruption of the student sit-in movement that began Feb. 1, 1960, and the spread of student-initiated protest across the American South; the movement by students from protest to grassroots organizing; the leadership role of women within a full-time grassroots organizing movement; the challenges of the grassroots political philosophy of SNCC; the tensions between student activists in SNCC and leaders from other established civil rights organizations; the impact of the Cold War and decolonization on SNCC’s organizing work; Black Power and the expansion of African American elected officials; and the lessons learned and continuing relevance of the history and memory of SNCC for American civic culture.
